The network card/adapter (or NIC) is responsible for connecting the computer to the Internet, via an Ethernet cable. A disabled network card/adapter is a common reason why people can't browse the Internet, if they are connected via a wired connection, i.e. Ethernet cable.

You can activate or deactivate the network module via the Network and Internet setting in the Control Panel.
Click the X button in the top-right corner of the window to close it
To disable the network adapter, repeat the steps above, but this time right-click the Local Area Connection icon (or another name, if you've changed it) and select Disable.
